Family Fun: Make Your Own Holiday Ornament!

The holidays can mean lots of time spent with family and friends. When the weather isn’t great to be outside, you can take advantage of the extra time inside with an art activity for the whole family.

The activity below can become a wonderful holiday ornament or it can be done any time of year depending on the picture you or the young person in your life chooses to draw. This step-by-step guide will take you through the project. Be creative and make it your own!

Supplies
Permanent markers
Pencil
Paper cut into 4x4 square
Cardboard cut into 4x4 square
Aluminum foil cut into 6x6 square
Clear cellophane cut into 6x6 square
Tape
Hole punch
String/ribbon

Step 1
In pencil, draw any image you would like on the piece of white paper. Try to fill as much of the space as you can.

Step 2
Lay the cellophane over the white paper. Tape the cellophane down so it doesn’t move. Then, using permanent markers, trace your image onto the cellophane. The more color you use the more interesting your final project will be. Don’t be afraid to fill in all the space.

Steps 3 and 4
After you finish tracing your picture, take the piece of aluminum foil and gently crinkle the foil. Then flatten it out and wrap it around the piece of cardboard.

Steps 5 and 6
Place the cellophane with your picture over the cardboard wrapped in foil. Line up the edges of the drawing with the edges of the cardboard. Next, flip everything over and tape down the cellophane, like you are wrapping a present.

Step 7
The final step is to punch a hole in the top of the cardboard and attach a string. You can also leave your artwork as is without a string attached.

This project can be adapted to any season. You can even change how big a piece you make depending on the supplies you have available.
Post photos of your project on Instagram and tag the Frick @frickpgh so we can see all the fun you are having.
